Hi there! I’m Dr. Dave McNew.

Pronouns: He/Him

I help people who struggle with feeling hurt, lost, or alone–especially those who hold marginalized identities. I am passionate about working with folks who identify as BIPOC and who are sexually or gender queer, trans, or non-binary.

I help co-author new ways of being with yourself and with others, bringing you to a sense of feeling more fully known, understood, and at peace.

How My Passion Developed

I learned that I simply could not outrun my pain.

I found myself getting stuck in the same sort of struggles again and again, and could not understand why. Putting on a brave face and outwardly pretending nothing was wrong did not help. Inwardly beating myself did not work.

I was left feeling loneliness, isolation, and profound frustration with myself.

Along the way…

In my travels, my cultural humility and celebration of human diversity were continually renewed. From Buddhist traditions, I found wisdom in practicing self-compassion, mindfulness, and radical acceptance. My thirst to know myself more deeply brought me to practice therapy from the relational psychodynamic lens.

My sense of peace and groundedness became less tied to the scenery, and more rooted in a way of being with myself and with others. I found that the final frontier was not outer space nor the ocean floor: it is in deeply knowing other people and other ways of being.

I learned that much of what I struggled to accept in myself was learned and built in old relationships, and could be reforged in new healing relationships. In this way, I could dare to embrace the unbearable parts of myself.

I found that this way of being could be cultivated and carried anywhere.

How I live out my passion as a therapist

I bring mindfulness and self-compassion to cultivate safe relationships in which you can understand and accept yourself more deeply, live more authentically, and feel more safety and joy in your relationships: both with others, and with yourself.

In a non-judgmental, compassionate space, we contact and rework the dynamics that keep you feeling stuck, dissatisfied, and in pain.

I help you face the parts of yourself that are hardest to feel, that get in the way of accepting yourself and being with others. I want to help you find deeper stability, relief, and peace.
